Every once in a while you hear a singing voice that makes your spine tingle.  And the effect isn’t limited to one genre of music.  They could be singing soaring ballads, dramatic arias, mournful melodies to love lost, rock anthems – some vocalists just have that special something that can make us well up, curl up into an emotional ball of self-pity, or vow to take on The Man… just as soon as this track is finished and I’ve put my air guitar back in its case.

Hong Kong born, London-based singer songwriter Susie Wilkins has one such voice.  Her most recent album, Anywhere but Here, is a balanced mix of ballads and more rock-pop numbers, many exploring the themes of love, grief and loss, emotions with which Susie has, in the past, been too familiar.  I was lucky enough to meet with Susie in a cafe in Stoke Newington, London where we sat down for a good long while, eating muesli, drinking coffee and discussed the ingenious birth of Anywhere but Here.  Tune in to 92.7FM on Thursday 19th September at 8pm, or click ‘listen live’ at Arrow FM to discover Susie’s intriguing story and wonderful voice.  My sincere thanks to Susie for her time, and her patience – trying to eat your breakfast while being interviewed takes some stamina!
